Morocco

In September 2025 I visited Morocco with Andy Farrer and Lightandland. Our tour took us from Marrakech to Essaouira for two nights and then down the coast to Agadir, inland to Taroudant, then through mountain landscapes to Agdez and finally to Merzouga, the landscape highlight of the tour in the sand dunes on the border with Algeria where we spent a night in a desert camp and rode camels. Our return took us off road in our 4WDs to visit cave dwelling Bedou and nomad communities via Tineghir, the Todgha gorge to the Dades valley. From there to Ouarzazate and finally back to Marrakech.

We visited a number of Kasbahs during our tour of Morocco. A kasbah in Morocco is a fortified residence or fortress, originally built by local rulers to protect their communities and serve as an administrative centre. These mudbrick structures feature thick walls, towers for surveillance, and often sit in strategic high-ground locations. Today, some kasbahs are preserved as heritage sites, while others have been transformed into unique accommodations like boutique hotels. We also visted a number of markets.

We spent several days on the road driving through the remarkably diverse landscape of Morocco, dominated by the Atlas Mountains in the central and southern regions and the Rif Mountains in the north, separating it from the Mediterranean Sea. Coastal plains along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts contrast with the arid Sahara Desert in the southeast, home to sand dunes, rocky plateaus, and oases. The country also features fertile agricultural lands in the plains and valleys. The weather was generally hot and dry but as we approached Marrakech through the high Atlas, reaching altitudes over 2,000m, we enjoyed some wonderful stormy views.
